Mexipino History Part I: Back in the day, in the 1920s and 30s, Filipino men were being recurited to work in the fields of California. They worked alongside Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese, etc. The Filipino men were called Manongs, an ilocano word of respect used to refer to older men. (By the way, I am Ilocano.) Only Filipino men, for the most part, were allowed to immigrate and were separated from Filipino women. Because these young men sought companionship and there was a lot of backlash against Manongs dating white women (there was an anti-misegenation law at the time), there was a good number of marriages between Filipinos and Mexicans!!
Although, there are no more anti-misegenation laws... I guess Filipinos and Mexicans are still getting together. Here I am with two of my Mexipino cousins, Jacob and Gabbie:
Interestingly, they are from the farmworker town of Salinas!!
